The Chattanooga Times Free Press is seeking a religion reporter to write with impact, clarity and insight about a key topic in our thriving corner of the southeast.
Chattanooga is “the buckle of the Bible Belt,” a hub for several Protestant denominations, a longtime home for a small but robust Jewish community and the site of an attack on local military that put Chattanooga’s Muslim community in the national spotlight. Religion shapes our culture, politics, education and philanthropy. It also is at the center of issues that most divide us — gay marriage, abortion and, increasingly, politics.
— Chattanoogans spend more of their discretionary income on church than anything else, according to Scarborough Nielsen research.
— Chattanooga is “the most Bible-minded city in the U.S,” according to a study from the American Bible Society.
— A study from the Barna Group ranked Chattanooga No. 1 on its Most Churched Cities list. Fifty-nine percent of Chattanoogans reported attending services once a week, compared to 38 percent nationwide.
— This region is home to 10 faith-based colleges and nearly one in five — 19 percent — of students in Hamilton County are enrolled in private schools, most of which are faith-based.
— The Church of God, one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in the world, is based in Cleveland, Tennessee, in our coverage area.
This job requires a great work ethic, a team mindset and lots of creativity. You should be able to work collaboratively across beats and disciplines. You must be driven to tell stories in new ways across many platforms. At least two years of experience at a daily or community news outlet is preferred.
The Times Free Press is part of a financially solid, privately owned media company with a newsroom that values mission-driven journalism and community service. The newspaper has been named the best in the state by the Tennessee Press Association for seven of the past eight years and has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize three times since 2013.
Chattanooga is a phenomenal place to live. It is one of the top outdoor destinations in the country and has become a magnet for major industries over the past decade. Our internet is the stuff of legends. There is a thriving downtown along the Tennessee River, and the city is within a two-hour drive of Atlanta and Nashville.
