Description:

The Maine Trust for Local News, home of the Portland Press Herald, Sun Journal and more, seeks an eloquent and confident journalist to spearhead our daily newsletter product.

The core job of the newsletter writer will be to produce a flagship daily newsletter — delivered to more than 50,000 inboxes and growing  — Monday through Friday mornings. This writer and curator will work Sunday through Thursday, crafting a deeply curated, sharply written newsletter that showcases the day’s most important and interesting journalism from our newsrooms.

The daily newsletter is not simply a collection of links and we’re not looking for dry AI-generated summaries. We need smart, original writing that distills stories and infuses context and color where appropriate, using a conversational tone with a strong voice. The writer also needs experienced news judgement and an innate sense of what kinds of stories our readers care about.

Inclusion of photos and interactive elements will be important too. We want the daily newsletter to not only reflect the most recent news but also drive conversation and engagement with readers.

Experience working in a fast-paced newsroom environment and meeting deadlines is crucial. Familiarity or a willingness to learn the newsletter platform Active Campaign and a working knowledge of audience analytics are pluses.

Collaborating with our newsletter editor, the writer will also monitor audience engagement metrics and adjust strategy on design, features and promotion to make sure we grow our product audience. The daily newsletter is one of our most direct and trusted connections with readers where we seek to build habits and meaningful connections.

The Maine Trust for Local News prides itself on high standards of professionalism and journalism that makes a difference for our readers. We are an equal-opportunity employer.

Applicants should send an email to Newsletter Editor Nina Mahaleris (nmahaleris@metln.org) with a cover letter that includes mention of what newsletters you currently read, a resume and three professional writing samples.
