Description:

Staff Writer

Help tell the stories shaping Jewish life in the Mid-Atlantic

Mid-Atlantic Media, publisher of Washington Jewish Week, Philadelphia Jewish Exponent and Baltimore Jewish Times, is looking for an ambitious, curious and versatile Staff Writer to join our growing editorial team.

This is an opportunity for a journalist who wants to be out in the community, talking to people, developing sources and finding stories that matter. We’re looking for someone with strong reporting and writing skills, sound news judgment and the initiative to pursue a story from the initial idea through publication.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, energetic and resourceful journalist who is accurate, organized and comfortable working on multiple assignments at once. You should be naturally curious, willing to ask questions others aren't asking and able to quickly get up to speed on unfamiliar subjects.

What You’ll Do

  • Report and write eight to 10 stories each week, including news, profiles, features and enterprise stories, for print and digital audiences.
  • Develop a reporting beat by building relationships with community leaders, institutions and other sources and staying alert to emerging stories and issues.
  • Pitch original story ideas and pursue them independently, while also working with editors on assigned stories.
  • Conduct interviews in person, by Zoom and by phone.
  • Attend community events, meetings and news conferences to find stories and develop sources.
  • Take photographs and video when appropriate to enhance digital and print coverage.
  • Contribute regularly to the publications' social media platforms, including Facebook, X and Instagram.
  • Upload and format stories for the website and assist with other digital publishing needs.
  • Compile community calendar items and obituary listings.
  • Proofread pages and other editorial materials before publication.
  • Take on other editorial responsibilities as needed in a collaborative newsroom.

What We’re Looking For

  • Professional journalism experience and a strong portfolio of published work.
  • Excellent reporting, writing, interviewing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to recognize a story and explain why it matters.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop sources and generate original story ideas.
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately while meeting frequent deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • A self-starter who can work independently but also values collaboration and editing.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, fluid newsroom where priorities can change quickly.
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community, Judaism and Israel is preferred.
  • Knowledge of politics and current affairs is a plus.
  • Must be able to work in person at our Columbia, Maryland, office.

Why This Job?

Our publications cover communities that are constantly changing and full of consequential stories — from local politics and antisemitism to Israel, Jewish institutions, culture, education and the people who make the region's Jewish communities unique.

The right reporter will have the opportunity to build a strong network of sources, develop a distinctive voice and take ownership of important stories across multiple platforms.

If you’re a journalist who likes to find the story rather than wait for it to be handed to you, we want to hear from you.
