Description:

Position: Senior Staff Writer
Reports To: WBJ Editor
Salary: $55,000 - $65,0000
Worcester Business Journal is seeking a full-time Senior Staff Writer to help lead our premier coverage of the Central Massachusetts business community.
At WBJ, which is one of the last independently owned newsrooms in New England, we take tremendous pride in the journalism we produce and the publications we create, to the acclaim of international organizations that count WBJ as one of the best business journals in the country. We are an extremely collaborative newsroom that pushes hard to produce the highest quality news and analysis, yet recognizes journalists are whole people, too, who may need to take time in the middle of the day to address issues in their personal lives. The CEO is a frequent presence in our offices, and WBJ’s parent company keeps all employees well informed of the happenings at all levels of the business.
Our small, but mighty, newsroom staff provides breaking news and subject matter expertise for key industries in the Central Massachusetts economy. WBJ maintains a constantly updated website, produces daily e-newsletters, and publishes a bimonthly print edition full of news and analysis. This new reporter would contribute to all of these products, in cooperation and collaboration with the other members of the newsroom. Journalism industry organizations like the Alliance of Area Business Publishers and the New England Newspaper & Press Association annually recognize us as a top publication, including in 2025 when AABP awarded us a top prize as one of the three best business journals in the country, despite our competing against much larger newsrooms. We punch above our weight.
Applicants for this position should have a strong foundation in journalism, with multiple years of experience in an established newsroom. Familiarity with business-to-business journalism is helpful, but not required. The person eventually hired for this position must be adept and nimble, work well with a team, be a multitasker, and have a drive to be the best at what they do.
While WBJ offers a flexible schedule and hybrid/remote work options, local journalism is best done in-person by professionals in the market, and the expectation for this position is that you will spend most of your time in Central Massachusetts, meeting people, understanding your beats, and learning the lay of the land.
WBJ and its parent company New England Business Media offer a competitive salary and benefits, including health & dental insurance, 401(k), flexible work schedules, above-average vacation days, and 10 paid holidays per year. Situated in Downtown Worcester, WBJ’s offices are in The Glass Tower skyscraper, offering views of the bustling commercial district.
